DAY 6 – Jars that Contain Treasure

Devotion

Most of us, if we are honest, have no trouble agreeing that we are indeed, ‘clay jars’. We have no trouble believing that we are fragile, flawed, vulnerable, and often broken vessels. But that is only part of the picture. The Bible says that we are “fragile jars containing this great treasure” (2 Corinthians 4:7).

Today I want us to reflect on and thank God for the treasure that He has placed inside each one of us.

I want you to imagine that you are a treasure hunter. You dig in the place where you think the treasure is buried in the hope of finding immense riches. Perhaps you dig through the roots and pieces of broken pottery—all worthless—but as you continue to dig, your shovel strikes something else. Excitedly you clear away the debris from the top of what appears to be a box. Could it be?! In reality, all you can see is dirt and a very ordinary looking vessel made of wood or clay- the very materials you have discarded as worthless. But as you lift the lid on this box, you see a brightness as the ‘glory’ of the treasure within shines out.

It is like that with our lives. On the outside we appear very ordinary and unimpressive. If you feel that way today, be encouraged. This is what Scripture says of Jesus in Isaiah 53:2

Isaiah 53:2 NIV
…He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him.

On the outside, Jesus looked as ordinary as you and me. However, in reality, He was anything but ordinary because God’s glory was shining through Him. Today I want you to get the revelation that YOU carry that glory! You are a person of incredible value because of what God has done in you. You are not defined by what has happened to you, what you have done or by what people may have said about you. You are defined by God’s glory inside of you!

Prayer

Father, I thank You today for choosing me, broken as I am, to be a treasure chest that carries Your glory. Shine through me today!
