"For this reason, because I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers. That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him, having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe. According to the working of his great might that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is name, not only in this age but also in the one to come. And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.”

Ephesians 1:15-23 (ESV)

From the worldview we are brought up in, we sometimes form an incomplete picture of Jesus. This incomplete picture can seem a bit like a Picasso painting—a little pixelated, wonky and all over the place. For example, do you KNOW that Jesus has all authority, or is it just head knowledge? Have you learnt that truth by personal experience or simply by hearing it from someone else? It is so important when reading God’s Word, that we consistently keep our hearts open and ask for the Holy Spirit’s help to fully grasp and understand what He is saying. Let’s dive in deeper and explore why this is important.

1. UNDERSTANDING leads to faith

You don't always need to understand everything before you make a decision. In fact, it is simply not possible to fully understand the vast depths of God’s infinite knowledge before we make the most important decision to follow Jesus and make Him Lord of our lives. However, the more rightly we understand, the more rightly we can believe and target our faith. So if we ask the Holy Spirit to help us really understand God’s Word, then our faith will be stirred and we will know where we need to direct that faith and believe in Him—rightly.

The more we understand about Jesus, the more our faith is stirred!

How then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard?... Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ.

Romans 10:14,17 (NIV)

These verses explain to us that faith comes by hearing the Word and understanding what you're hearing! So, the more rightly you understand, the more rightly you will believe. This same principle applies to when you receive faith and grow in that faith.

Let’s look at this practically.

As we read and understand God’s Word, our faith rises and we believe in who He is. This enables us to apply God’s truth to our situation. If we believe that Jesus is our Healer, then our faith begins to rise and we apply it to situations where we need healing. You see, for us to believe, we first need to understand and right understanding leads to right believing. That means every right belief is an open door that grants us access to God’s power. Likewise, every wrong belief about God is a closed-door which denies us this access.

By faith Sarah herself received power to conceive, even when she was past the age, since she considered him faithful who had promised.

Hebrews 11:11 (ESV)

In KJV, it says they judged the character of God. We see how Abraham and Sarah made a correct assessment of God’s character. They believed He was faithful and He was the right place to put their faith. Their right belief in God connected them to Him and brought a miracle.

2. Faith ASSOCIATES us with God

As we grow in our knowledge of God, our faith in Him also grows and creates a connection. It is what we believe that connects us to Him, rather than what we do. If our faith was built on our own actions, we would be disconnected from God. It is because our faith is built on HIS actions and HIS character, that we stay associated (connected) with Him.

But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared for them a city.

Hebrews 11:16 (ESV)

Because of your faith, God says that He is your God. He associates Himself with you! When God reintroduced himself to Israel through Moses, in Exodus 3, God told Moses to tell the people, "I am the God of Abraham". In other words, "You can associate me with that man of faith."

God said to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM." And he said, "Say this to the people of Israel: "I AM has sent me to you." God also said to Moses, "Say this to the people of Israel: 'The LORD, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you. This is my name forever, and thus I am to be remembered throughout all generations.

Exodus 3:14-15 (ESV)

Think about how careful people and brands are with what they associate themselves with. This is because when an association is made, it is assumed that both parties share a value system—good or bad. Yet God associates Himself with us! When you associate yourself with something or someone, your reputation is at stake. Our reputation is affected by our associations and God says, "You can associate My Name with them - I will put My reputation on that."

God constantly associated Himself with people who were not perfect and His Word didn't record their wrongdoings or character flaws. It was simply because they were people of faith. They rightly believed in God’s character, which in turn, associated them with Him. He was their God, and today, He is your God.

Don't establish your connection with God based on your current circumstances or past. Your association with God is set because you believe Him and who He says He is. He is the right place to put your faith. As you put your faith in Him, it establishes a connection with Him.

No matter what season you’re in, you are NOT stuck. You are NOT connected to your problems or your past. You have a higher connection and you are associated with God. Pray with faith, believe in Him and access who He is.

3. Association Leads to ACCESS

Our association with Jesus gives us supernatural access to God and the Kingdom of Heaven . You don't need to fight to have your voice heard. You are connected to a HIGH authority and your prayers are heard by Him—not because of what you've done or where you've been, but because of what you believe about Him.

Through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God.

Romans 5:2 (NIV)

Referring back to Ephesians 1:18-19 — what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might— we see the incredible benefit of our association with God: You have a glorious inheritance in Him!

Some of us are filled with fear when we look to the future— how are we going to solve our problems? But we know who holds our future. We have an inheritance in Christ which means we have great promises for our future. The second part of that passage tells us that by simply believing, we have access to the “immeasurable greatness of His Power”.

What does inheritance mean? It is a gift given because of association. Somebody earned those gifts on our behalf. When it comes to our relationship with God, our hard work won’t gain us access. Instead, it is our association through our faith in Jesus that gives us access to an inheritance that we did not earn. We can’t work to earn healing, blessing, favour or a place in Heaven! We freely inherit all of these things as we believe. What a powerful promise! Jesus is our key to supernatural access, so let’s put our faith in HIM rather than hoping our situations will change.

When I was younger, I moved states and times were tough financially. One week, I only had some loose change—$6 worth of coins to be exact—to buy petrol for my car. But what I didn't know was that I had been paid $600 for a job I had done previously which had been deposited in my bank account. Because I didn’t know that the money was already in my account, I couldn’t access it. My lack of knowledge led to my lack of access! The moment that I realised that I had funds in my account, my faith was put into action and I was able to access what was already mine.

Perhaps this is how we have been living. It is because of our lack of knowledge that we don't know what's already in our account and don’t reach out to access it in times of need—even though it's ours. Do NOT write yourself off. This is not just a word for somebody else. If you are a believer in Jesus Christ, YOU have an inheritance in Him.

What do we have access to? Ephesians 1 tells us that every spiritual blessing is ours in Christ Jesus. Did you catch that? You have access to EVERY spiritual blessing. You have supernatural access in Jesus. There is abundant provision for your family in Jesus, freedom from addiction, release from the patterns of sins, emotional restoration and wholeness, and reconciliation of relationships in Jesus—just to name a few! Jesus brings families back together, He brings life to dead things, He brings order to dysfunction, He makes all things new and He puts broken things back together again. There is access to healing and a supernatural turnaround for YOU! This is your incredible inheritance in Jesus.

Whatever it is you need, don't base your expectations on your actions. Be like Abraham and live by faith TODAY. Allow your faith to tell the story that despite the fact that you are not perfect, your right belief in God’s character has associated you with Him.
