DAY 39: THE COMMISSION

Planetshakers Team 8 July 2025

Scripture

Matthew 28:18-20 NLT
Jesus came and told his disciples, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

Devotion

I know we’ve already briefly looked at this passage and idea, but it’s worth revisiting. As you read this scripture of Jesus commissioning and sending His disciples out into the world, He makes one thing abundantly clear — “All authority has been given to me!” This was not just a nice thing for Jesus to say, but it shows us that the absolute authority Jesus won on the cross is the foundation of the Great Commission. The One with ALL authority was sending the disciples out with the power and authority of His name.

This is the same for us today! Understanding how we walk out Divine Authority is the absolute foundation of everything we do! We’re not just sent out to complete a task or mission out of mindless obedience or obligation, but we have the delegated authority of Jesus with us, empowering and anointing us in everything we do. This means as we go about our daily lives, we walk with authority. We have the power of Jesus to heal, the authority of Jesus to tell demons to go, the wisdom of Jesus to guide us through every situation we face and to go and make disciples!

I remember a time I was working in the city in a corporate role and was having lunch with one of the girls from the office. I had been growing in my understanding of the authority we have in Christ and this meant my confidence was growing to reach out and pray for people with the authority God has given us! I was asking God for opportunities to walk out in His authority. As we ate lunch together, she began to share about all the troublesome things happening in her world — it was an overflow of disorder and chaos. I felt the Holy Spirit nudge me to share about Jesus and be bold, and ask her if she was open to forgiving these people that hurt her. I shared with her that this would be the key to take authority over all the disorder and chaos in her life. Tears began to well up in her eyes as she nodded and right there in the café we prayed together, leading her to Jesus! This is operating in our divine authority to walk out the Great Commission!

This is how Jesus wants us to live! A life of the Spirit, walking out the authority that Jesus has given us to go and make disciples! Today, why don’t you ask God to give you opportunities to walk out His authority and to step out in fulfilling the Great Commission in your world!

Prayer

Thank you, Jesus, that You have given me all authority, which means I can step out with confidence that I have the backing of the name of Jesus!

I ask for opportunities to fulfil the Great Commission and to make disciples of all nations.

Lord, I don’t want to be a spectator on the sidelines, watching a move of God, but I want to be part of this move of God to see people’s lives changed and transformed!
