God’s Word, the Bible, is the ultimate authority in our lives. Even though God used men to write it, we have simple faith that every word is God-breathed and inspired by the Holy Spirit (2 Tim 3:16–17).
Have you ever read something in the Bible that challenged the way you thought? Whenever we come across something in His Word that’s different from how we see things, we are faced with a question: whose authority will we submit to? Will it be the perspective of our own experiences and worldview? Or will we allow these perspectives to be changed by His Word? As Christians, we don’t pick and choose the parts of the Bible that we like or dislike; we let God’s Word shape the way we see the world.
It reminds me of the journey of a young couple in our church. When they got saved and gave their lives to Jesus, they had already been living together for a few years but weren’t married. As they grew in God and read the Word, they were confronted by the Holy Spirit about God’s standard for relationships and purity. The way they had lived and thought had been so different from what they were now reading. Though it was costly for them at the time, they made the powerful decision to bend their perspective to the authority of God’s Word and allow it to change their lives. They set about plans to get married, and in the meantime, they made the bold decision to stop living together and sleeping together until they had made that covenant before God.
Whilst that season was challenging, it allowed them to reset the foundation of their relationship on God’s Word. Today, they are happily married, leading others around them and doing great things for the Kingdom of God!
Let’s ask ourselves this question today: Do I really hold God’s Word as the ultimate authority in my heart?
Prayer
Holy Spirit, please speak to me through Your Word. Help me to surrender my understanding and perspective to the authority of Your Word. I trust You and thank You that Your way is best.
Amen.
