In the midst of life’s busyness and burdens, there’s a deep and lasting joy available to everyone—and it’s found in prayer. Joy in prayer isn’t just about feeling happy while we pray. It’s about encountering the presence of God, where true joy is found! When we learn to engage with God not just to ask for help, but to connect relationally, we discover that joy is not fleeting or circumstantial—it becomes our strength.
Prayer is more than a religious practice; it’s a powerful, ongoing conversation with our Heavenly Father who loves us. When our prayer life deepens, our joy multiplies. This joy then overflows into every part of our lives, helping us find joy every day, no matter the season we’re in. Let’s explore how we can unlock the power of joy in prayer and experience the strength it brings.
When our prayer life deepens, our joy multiplies.
Understanding the Connection Between Prayer and Joy
At its core, prayer is about relationship. The more we lean into intimacy with God through prayer, the more we become aware of His presence—and as the Bible says, in His presence, there is fullness of joy (Psalm 16:11). That means prayer doesn’t just change situations; it changes us from the inside out.
Take for example a time when I was looking for international flights to see my family over Christmas, but I was very restricted by my budget! I chose to pray in faith for supernaturally affordable flights and specifically prayed that the return flights would not exceed $1,000. Usually, flight prices increase the closer you get to the departure date, but because I was choosing to believe that “the prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective” (James 5:16) I prayed and waited for the prices to drop. After a few weeks the prices started to rise, and this did lead to me worrying that the prices would not go back down and that it was a mistake to step out in faith. BUT! Everytime I prayed for the flight price to come down I would feel supernatural expectancy come into my heart and replace the fear with faith, and the joy of seeing a miracle. As I got closer to the departure date I still didn’t have tickets booked, but only a few weeks before the departure date I woke up one morning, checked online and the flights had plummeted to under $1,000! Not only did I experience the supernatural miracle but along the way God filled me with faith, peace and joy as I looked forward to seeing the breakthrough.
When we pray, especially with an open and expectant heart, we position ourselves to receive peace, clarity, and supernatural joy. This kind of joy isn’t based on external circumstances. It’s rooted in knowing who God is, trusting His promises, and experiencing His comforting presence.
For those who are tired, discouraged, or emotionally drained, joy might feel out of reach. But here’s the good news: the joy of the LORD is our strength (Nehemiah 8:10), and intimacy with God through prayer is how we position ourselves to receive the LORD’s joy.
Biblical Insights on Joy and Prayer
The Bible offers a wealth of wisdom on the link between prayer and joy. Here are just a few key verses that highlight this connection:
- Philippians 4:6-7 – “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God... will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Peace and joy flow from prayer.
- John 16:24 – “Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.”
These scriptures reveal that joy doesn’t come after things improve—it can be present in the waiting, in the asking, and in worship. Experiencing God’s supernatural joy is our strength in the journey, and prayer is how we tap into it.

Practical Steps to Cultivate Joy Through Prayer
So how do we practically experience more joy through prayer? Here are some intentional ways to begin cultivating joy in your prayer life.
Establishing a Consistent Prayer Life
Joy in prayer often grows out of consistency. Just like any relationship, intimacy with God deepens over time. Carving out daily time to connect with God can make a powerful difference.
Set a routine that works for you:
- Morning devotions - I personally find these the best way to start the day. Before I check my phone/read my emails/go on social media, I start my day with God’s encouraging word in His presence. No better way to start the day!
- Evening reflections
- Short prayer walks during lunch breaks
Start small and build from there. Over time, these moments will become your source of strength and renewal.
Incorporating Gratitude into Your Prayers
Gratitude is a joy multiplier. When we thank God for what He’s already done, our hearts shift from lack to abundance.
Try starting each prayer time with three things you’re grateful for. They can be big or small. Over time, this simple habit will help you find joy every day, even when circumstances are tough.
As 1 Thessalonians 5:16–18 encourages: “Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”
Using Prayer to Overcome Challenges
When life is hard, prayer doesn’t ignore the pain—but it gives us the perspective and peace to endure it. Joy is not the absence of struggle; it’s the presence of God in the middle of it.
Through prayer, we are reminded of God's promises, His nearness, and His ability to work all things for good. This truth strengthens our hearts and renews our joy, even in seasons of loss or uncertainty

Personal Testimonies: Finding Joy Through Prayer
Many have experienced the transforming power of joy through prayer. One young woman at Planetshakers shared how daily journaling her prayers brought her peace in the middle of anxiety. “It was like God was meeting me on the page,” she said. “I started to smile again—not because everything was fixed, but because I knew I wasn’t alone.”
Another man shared how praying with a small group helped him through grief. “Every week we prayed together, and every week, I felt a little lighter. Eventually, the sadness made room for joy.”
Whether it’s through quiet moments alone or corporate prayer with others, the joy that comes through prayer is real, powerful, and deeply personal.
Encouragement to Deepen Your Prayer Journey
If you’ve been feeling spiritually dry or stuck, don’t give up. Joy is still available. Start where you are—God is not measuring how perfect your prayers sound; He’s after your heart.
Ask Him to stir a hunger for His presence. Invite the Holy Spirit to lead your conversations with God. As you continue to seek Him, joy is your strength, and it will rise again.
